Testimonial

“To achieve the ISO 17025 standard, CIC had to draw together a number of existing procedures and develop new ones which were not in place. AvISO were able to provide the necessary consultancy to join these together and steer CIC successfully through the accreditation process. CIC has clearly changed in the last few years and a more professional service is now provided to its broadening range of clients. We look forward to developing and maintaining our accreditation status with AvISO in the future.”

project OVERVIEW

Cranfield Impact Centre (CIC) is an internationally respected facility, integrated with Cranfield University, with expertise in vehicle crashworthiness and occupant simulation.

In the quest for service excellence, CIC pursued and obtained the ISO 17025 accreditation to provide their clients additional trust and receive UKAS recognition that the laboratory has established the technical competency and procedures to obtain independent and reliable test results.

ISO 17025 is the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories. The ISO 17025 accreditation demonstrates that an organisation's laboratory is committed to following several key components of the Standard. These include;

  • validated test procedures
  • respect confidentiality
  • have only competent and authorised staff
  • use adequate test equipment
  • ensure the required environmental conditions.

AvISO has supported CIC for over three years with their Quality Management System ISO 9001:2015. They approached us to help obtain accreditation to ISO 17025, and we appointed Ana Camilo as their dedicated consultant on the project. Ana is highly skilled in several ISO standards, including ISO 9001, ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and AS 9100 and IATF 16494 and ISO 17025 and ISO 17024.

Consultant Comment

My main focus on this project was to support Cranfield Impact Centre, ensuring they achieved accreditation to ISO 17025. Doing this will be essential in the laboratory to enhance its reputation and demonstrate that the test results obtained are validated, trustable, and that independence is ensured.

The CIC ISO 17025 accreditation scope also covers Wheelchair dynamic sled tests, according to ISO 7176, Coach seat tests according to UNECE Regulation 80, Mounting of medical devices and their equipment in Road Ambulances according to BS EN 1789:2020, Testing of the retention systems and fixation of the equipment in the patient's compartment, testing of the stretcher fixation on the vehicle floor and testing of medical devices fixation.

Critical success factors were the significant track record of the laboratory supported by a highly-skilled, professional engineering team, client focus and the support of the AvISO Consultancy team.

ISO 17025 is a very technical standard which differs to other ISO Standards in that it is accredited by UKAS directly and is not a certification gained through a third-party body. Key elements of implementing this standard are the attention to detail needed, this was made simpler by using the ISOvA Toolbox software collating everything in one place.
