Ireland's National Renewable Energy Action Plan sets an overall target for 16% of energy use, across all sectors, to be from renewable energy by 2020.
This includes sub-targets of 12% for heat, 40% for electricity; and 10% for transport. There has been a growing focus on energy efficiency in construction. The Building Regulations (Part L Amendments) Regulations 2017 provide for the conservation of fuel and energy in buildings.
The European Union (Energy Performance of Buildings) Regulations 2019 and the European Union (Energy Performance of Buildings) (No. 2) Regulations 2019 provide for nearly all buildings to be nearly zero energy buildings.
The Climate Action Plan 2019 provides for several targets in the housing sector, including the: Reduction of CO2eq emissions by 40% to 45% by 2030. Completion of 500,000 retrofits to achieve a Building Energy Rating of B2 or above by 2030. Gradual phasing out of gas and oil boilers (to be replaced with heat pumps).
