Ultra-Low Emissions Zone Quick Facts

March 7, 2019

Why are we doing this?

Air pollution is London’s most significant environmental aspect which affects the health of all Londoners.

The dates

From 8 April 2019 new, tighter emission standards - Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) standards - will affect petrol and diesel vehicles in central London.

What vehicles will be affected and what are the costs?
Cars
  • Petrol cars that meet the ULEZ standards are generally those registered with the DVLA after 2005, although cars that meet the standards have been available since 2001
  • Diesel cars that meet the standards are generally those registered with the DVLA after September 2015
Fines
  • Daily ULEZ charge: £12.50
  • Penalty charge: £160 (reduced to £80 if paid within 14 days)
Vans
  • All new diesel vans sold from September 2016 should meet the Euro 6 standard
  • All petrol vans registered with the DVLA from January 2006 meet the Euro 4 standard
Fines
  • Daily ULEZ charge: £12.50
  • Penalty charge: £160 (reduced to £80 if paid within 14 days)
Lorries, coaches and larger vehicles
  • All vehicles in this category will need to meet Euro VI standards.
Fines
  • Daily charge: £100
  • Penalty charge: £1,000 (reduced to £500 if paid within 14 days)
What’s the future?

From 25 October 2021, the ULEZ boundary will be extended to create a larger zone bounded by the North and South Circular Roads. If you are driving any petrol or diesel vehicle within this enlarged area you will also need to meet new tighter emissions standards or pay a daily charge.

This daily charge is in addition to the weekday Congestion Charge if you drive in central London as well.

Vehicles using the North and South Circular Roads and not going into the ULEZ will not be charged.
