ISO 20121 Certification – Sustainable Event Management Consultancy (SEMS)

Deliver events that are environmentally responsible, socially inclusive, and operationally resilient with ISO 20121

ISO 20121 provides a clear framework to deliver events that minimise environmental harm, promote social value, and contribute to long-term economic sustainability. As the international standard for Sustainable Event Management Systems (SEMS), it helps event organisers and suppliers embed sustainability into the entire event lifecycle — from early planning to final review.

Whether you're managing high-profile conferences, international festivals, brand activations, or internal events, ISO 20121 enables you to align operations with environmental goals, stakeholder expectations, and public trust.

AvISO makes ISO 20121 implementation practical and effective. Our consultants have supported live events, venues, and agencies across the UK and internationally. Backed by ISOvA, our Microsoft 365-based platform, we help you simplify compliance, centralise reporting, and demonstrate impact.

What our clients say

Common challenges with ISO 20121 — and how we solve them

Many organisations struggle with:

  • Tight lead times and high supplier turnover
We provide sustainability tools that work in real-time, not just in planning documents. From supplier assessments to operational checklists, we keep sustainability embedded in fast-paced projects.

  • Sustainability seen as a ‘cost’
We show where environmental and social responsibility can reduce long-term expenses, support funding applications, and strengthen brand reputation.
  • Multiple delivery models and teams
We help you maintain consistent sustainability principles across venues, formats, and subcontractors — using ISOvA to centralise updates and responsibilities.

AvISO’s approach is about practical, visible sustainability — not just policies and paperwork.

Sustainable events are no longer a bonus — they’re expected. ISO 20121 helps you meet that expectation while reducing risk, improving outcomes, and telling a stronger story. Our consultants and ISOvA platform simplify the path to certification — and help you embed sustainability in a way that’s visible, auditable, and lasting.

Integrated ISO 20121 systems for joined-up sustainability

ISO 20121 integrates seamlessly with other standards under the Annex SL structure. We often combine it with:

  • ISO 14001 – Environmental management
Supports shared controls for energy, waste, and emissions. Integration avoids duplication in audits, documentation, and impact monitoring.
  • ISO 9001 – Quality management
Aligns sustainability with event quality, performance targets, and feedback mechanisms. This is particularly relevant for client-driven activations and public events.
  • ISO 45001 – Occupational health and safety
Helps integrate safe working practices, crowd safety, accessibility, and welfare into the sustainability system.
  • ISO 22301 – Business continuity
Supports resilience planning in the face of disruptions — from weather and power outages to strikes or pandemics. Helps maintain sustainable delivery even under pressure.
  • ISO 14064 – Greenhouse gas emissions
Allows you to track, quantify, and report carbon emissions from events — from energy to travel and procurement. Supports net-zero and ESG strategies.
  • ISO 50001 – Energy management
Integrates efficient energy usage into your venue and production design. Particularly relevant for large-scale lighting, AV, and temporary infrastructure.

This integrated approach builds consistency across functions and simplifies sustainability reporting across multiple frameworks.

  • UKAS is the ‘United Kingdom Accreditation Service,’ recognised by the British Government to assess the competence of auditing bodies that provide certification, testing, inspection, and calibration services. UKAS audits certification bodies: such as ISOQAR, BSI, NQA and QEC to ensure compliance. Many businesses are sold cheaper quotes for ISO standards by certification bodies / consultancies without UKAS accreditation. Please be aware, without UKAS accreditation potential contracts can be lost as when clients realise the EMS is not valid, they may require you to recertify with a UKAS accredited certification body before signing bilateral contracts. For advice/ consultancy contact an ISO provider certified by UKAS.

  • Leadership in sustainability events management is being demonstrated through ISO 20121:2012 certification by many companies. For example, Sustainable Events Ltd, Manchester United, London 2012 Olympics, Earl’s Court, and Olympia.
Can ISO 20121:2012 be integrated into existing ISO Management Systems?
  • Yes, if you already have ISO 9001:2015 or ISO 14001:2015 you are already half-way there as the fundamental procedures and clauses follow the same Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle and the Annex SL high-level structure.
  • However, ISO 20121:2012 can also act as a stand-alone standard and doesn’t require integration with other ISO management systems.
Do I need an ISO consultant?
  • No, you don’t. However, it is worth considering the trade-off between the time and cost of organising an internal team required to set up an ISO standard against an external management consultant providing guidance and support to ensure conformity and certification.

  • Our expert consultants are always available for help and advice. Regular visits and communication can be arranged together with an internal annual audit program agreed upon as an ongoing AvISO consultancy service.
How do we get the correct ISO for our organisation?
  • The foundation on which to build an integrated management system commonly starts with (ISO 9001:2015) as this will improve customer satisfaction, introduce the organisation to the process-led approach and improve operational effectiveness through internal feedback.
  • However, depending upon your industry and clients, speaking to your clients about what they require and contacting consultants like us to give advice on each standard will help identify your best route.
What is the ISOvA Toolbox, and how does it work?

What is ISO 20121, and what does it cover?

ISO 20121 is the international standard for Sustainable Event Management. It helps organisations plan and deliver events that minimise environmental harm, promote social inclusion, and support long-term value creation.

Who is ISO 20121 for?

Any organisation involved in events — including organisers, venues, caterers, suppliers, sponsors, and broadcasters. Whether you run physical, hybrid, or virtual events, ISO 20121 applies.

What are the benefits of ISO 20121 certification?

It improves reputation, meets regulatory and procurement requirements, supports funding bids, engages stakeholders, and reduces environmental and social risks. It also builds stronger legacy and impact outcomes.

Is ISO 20121 only about environmental impact?

No. It covers social responsibility, economic impact, accessibility, diversity, and ethical considerations — not just carbon or waste.

Do we need to achieve carbon neutrality?

ISO 20121 does not require carbon neutrality, but it supports emissions measurement, reduction, and voluntary offsetting. This can be integrated with ISO 14064 or Net Zero strategies.

How long does certification take?

Most projects take 3 to 5 months, depending on your scale, readiness, and existing systems.

Can ISO 20121 be used for one-off events?

Yes. While it is designed to support continuous improvement, it can be used for single events — provided planning, delivery, and review are documented.

What documents are required?

Your SEMS will need policies, impact assessments, stakeholder records, KPIs, training logs, audit reports, supplier evaluations, and post-event reviews.

How does ISO 20121 relate to ISO 14001?

ISO 14001 focuses on environmental management in general. ISO 20121 applies this thinking to events — but also adds stakeholder engagement, accessibility, and legacy requirements.

Can ISOvA help across multiple events and sites?

Yes. ISOvA supports centralised control of sustainability across portfolios — from regional events to international campaigns.
